Disabled Default Recording Device (windows xp)

I'm trying to record sound from an external mic. Only 1 input jack, which has worked before, and I have tried several diffrent troubleshooting options.. My Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>Audio tab has 3 sections (Sound Playback, MIDI music playback, and Sound Recording) and my Sound Recording section is disabled or inable to be changed. (No Recording Devices shows in the box, which is greyed out).. Help please??
