memory gone bad?

Is it possible for a memory chip to go bad?I ran a dos based
program on my computer and was told that i have a problem in memory slot 1.That makes since to me because i'm only using memory slot1.I can't load himem.sys in win98 nor in dos.So is it possible for memory to go bad.

Sure it is. Any number things could cause it- but it's usually a build up of static electricity inside your system-caused from dust.

Would the memory system count up on post identify if his memory is bad? I also remember reading a long time ago when I built this one that some were switching their memory to another one of the memory slots to get their systems to boot but I don't know why.

On that note, what does the memory count actually do? What does it check for? Since the "Quick boot" option on my bios allows it to skip this, I'm wondering why mb's seem to ship with this option off.
