My computer needs an upgrade

Hi, I have a pretty old computer and I want it to start running computer games more smoothly..If you could just tell me what needs upgrading or if I should just get a whole new computer in general. I am kinda on a budget so the biggest bang for my buck would be great...any feedback would be very helpful as I am not very tech savvy.

You should try a amd apu
if you can wait then you can have trinity apu a great bang for buck, they have inbuil gpu and trinity will have 6990's design based gpu, A BIG BANG FOR THE BUCK

and apu loves faster ram

Look at Toms computer builds - you buy the parts and put it together yourself - greater flexibility & much better performance/dollar.
