I am looking for a new camera. One major requirement is support for external
flash/hot shoe.
I will probably not usually be creating greater than 3M pixel images, but I
would hope to get very good quality at that size. Higher res wouldn't hurt,
I juts might not use it so much. I tend to prefer an SLR "style" camera as I
find that more comfortable to work with, although I am probably not in the
price range of a digital SLR. It would be good if it supported XD cards (as
I already have some).
I am drawn to the FinePix s7000 which seems to tick all the boxes, and has a
lot of other bonuses. It seems to be quite a good price (just over 300 UKP).
The only downside is that a few reviews I have read mark down the image
quality. Can anyone comment in this? Is a 6M camera going to produce very
good results at 3M even if the 6M quality is not quite the best?
Is there anything else I should be looking at in this price range?
If I did stretch my budget a bit (500 quid-ish for example) what more could
I expect to get with this type of camera? In particular, any recommendations
for slightly more expensive cameras which would give much better quality
without losing any othe features?
Not too familiar with what is out there at the moment, I am hoping this will
help me find my bearings.

Well, why buy a 6mpxl if you're never going to take advantage of it. Go
for the Panasonic Lumix FZ20. Quite compact with a 12x zoom and very
good image stabilization.
Yes, you can use xD cards in the S7000 as well as Compact Flash

That seems to be about it. The electronic viewfinder is very useful in
bright sunshine - where most LCD screens are next to useless.
I'm very happy with my S7000 - it replaced a Sony S-70 (3.3mpxl)
The 6.3 mpxl is very useful if the 6x zoom doesn't reach far enough - 6x
is equivalent to about 210mm on a 35mm camera. And the interpolated
12mpxl is very clever. There is green/purple fringing at high
magnification but you'll find that with most non-pro digitals.
The only bug I have with the 7000 is the auto-focus is very aggressive
and it's sometimes difficult to over-ride this.
If you buy the S7000, I'd recommend getting at least a 512mb card,
better still a 1gb.

The next step would probably be a Canon Kiss SLR in the £500 range.

Well, I didn't say *never*. However, at 5 megs the FZ20 is probably more
than adequate, and as you say the zoom range is quite something!
Shame it takes SD not XD, but my PDA uses SD so at least I can share the
cards with that.

Since the thread is about the S7000 I assume you're at least
slightly familiar with the S5100/S5500. 10x optical zoom (no IS)
and it uses xD cards. And exceptionally long battery life, even
with alkalines. Why do you prefer xD over SD? Already have other xD
using cameras or devices?

i recently purchased olympus 8080. the quality of the pictures just
blew me away. so much better than my canon s50. very little noise for
subject in the shadow as opposed to s50. check dpreview. if quality is
what you're looking for, olympus 8080 will not disappoint. i don't know
about uk, but in us, 8080 can be had for less than $600 now.

Hot shoe (or some kind of external flash) is pretty much essential. AFAIK
they don't have it (unless I made a mistake?)

Unfortunately, this camera seems a bit more pricey over here. If I could
find it for the equivalent of $600 it might be an easier decision.

The S5100 doesn't, but I've heard that the S7000 does. Or by
"they" did you mean the S5100 and S5500? Despite the different
names they're the same camera.

Ah. I hope your old ones are all at least 128MB or larger. 128MB
would be too small for me to consider getting for even the lower
resolution S5100.
