Hi Guys

I put together a desktop PC around 5 years ago back when I was a lot more interested in this stuff. I am now looking to invest in the system a little to allow me to play some more recent games. My current setup is as follows:

ASUS M2N-E Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Processor
Corsair 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 XMS2 Memory
Western Digital 250gb Hard Drive
ATI Radeon X1950 pro Graphics Card

First of all has this motherboard going to be good enough to allow me to upgrade the machine? I'm not looking to create a mind blowing gaming rig, just something low to mid range.

Once I am clearer on this I can look at the rest.

Cheers

Chris

Sorry, no. That platform has been dead for 3 years or more.

You will want to upgrade the MB, CPU, and memory. The good news is that $200 will get you a significant upgrade in that area, and the most you would want to spend there would be around $400.

Any $100 GPU or better will easily upgrade the GPU.

So with all that in mind this would be a good upgrade on a small budget:
ASRock 870 Extreme3 R2.0 AM3+ AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
PowerColor AX6770 1GBD5-H Radeon HD 6770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card
AMD Gift - Dirt3 Game Coupon - OEM
G.SKILL NS 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-4GBNS
AMD Phenom II X4 960T Zosma 3.0GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor HD96ZTWFGRBOX
TOTAL: $332.96

But you'll have to look at your HDD and PSU also.

That board is still serviceable. Make sure you see the CPU support list for that board and get the bios updated.

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM2/M2NE/#CPUS

You can juice it up easily with the following:

Athlon II x4 640 $99.00
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM2/M2NE/#CPUS

Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 (2x1GB) $32.99

Powercolor AX6790 1GB Radeon HD6790 $129.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131397

Roughly $250

Like the other poster said, You might want to take a look at your PSU. Graphics card might need to be lower if you don't have enough power.

BTW, I loved my M2N-E board. I'm still using it.

I'm a bit shocked that the board will support those. I have to admit when I saw the CPU I assumed it was a 939 board and didn't look further.

Do you have a link or can you explain what they are talking about in the BIOS upgrade?

One the cpu support list it tells you what version of the bios you need to have but also lets you know what needs to be removed. I haven't looked into it more but I'm assuming ASUS has more instructions for that particular bios update. I think it's version 3001

Hi Chris and all,

I have the same system, except for 2 160Gb HDD, How did you go with the upgrade?

The problem I have is, that after looking into the requirements of win 8and being such a cheap upgrade, I decided to upgrade from XP to win 8 running in 64 bit mode, I have finally got nearly everything running except the graphics card as it does not have an updated driver to support directx11.

My question is, the board will support up to 8Gb of mmory. Will it still be feasible with an upgrade in processor, memory and graphics card?

I am just after a tempory upgrade till I can afford a 2014 model :D

I would be grateful for any help as I have sent emails to part suppliers but get no replies as they want to sell ne equipment.
Cheers and thanks
