Hi i am currently looking to upgrade my homebuilt pc to increase my performance when running The Old Republic. I can afford to upgrade either my CPU or my GPU but I am unsure as to which would be a larger upgrade. I have a budget of £150.

my current CPU and GPU are as follows:

AMD Athlon II x3 445 3.1ghz
Sapphire HD 6850 1gb

any help you can offer would be appreciated.
thanks.

Tom's article "Star Wars: The Old Republic: PC Performance, Benchmarked" shows significant improvement in minimums for that game at 1920 going from a tri- to a quad-core CPU using a strong graphics card, the HD 6970. Your graphics card, though two tiers below the 6970, does not suck. I would get a fast quad-core immediately just to see whether it helps. Tom seems to think it will. You don't say what mobo you have, so we can't recommend a processor, but beware of "unlocking" your tri-core---that fourth core is locked because it tested bad at the factory.
