Hello,
I was wondering if it would be worthwhile to keep my fx-4100 or return and get an 2500k and this motherboard:

If you can, wait for the reviews. See if they fixed the heat problem!

Well to be honest comparing the two as like apple and oranges right now. You said you would be gaming and if money is not an issue than go with the 2500k as it's way better than the fx-4100 your thinking of keeping for gaming. And hopefully no flame wars on this thread.

you said Return it?

meaning you just purchased the FX-4100 correct?
Will they still take the return in a months time?

As take into consideration any new hardware released will be a little while before they have good avaliability and stock levels.

Often components are released but its a good month or 2 before average Joe can get hold of one.

If they allow you to return it then give it a consideration, but you will likely have to spend more money on a Motherboard and 2500k which will make your overall expenditure a lot higher.

Heard it internally about 2 months ago from Intel 3rd party testers that IB was to be avoided and place hopes more on Haswell, the consensus way back then was "IB will flop", its looking more and more like that with more people I know getting hold of IB chips for testing. I saw one yesterday and apart from the 95w TPD rating on the box along with the non noticable performance yield over a Sandy, you are best going with the 2500K if possible, and if you don't persist with your current setup.

Another question, why did you buy the FX 4100 where it is priced to compete at the $120 market, where a 2500k is priced at $220 that is indicative of a performance difference alone. If you wanted a FX equivilant of the 2500k then the $180 FX 8120 was the right option.

why run it on such a low rez and does the 3x behind the gfx card mean your gonna run tri sli? if so your gonna choke your system no matter what you run on it... if the reason your sending back your cpu is because its choking then really what you need is a bigger monitor rather than a new cpu... as its down to the screen rez alone causing it to choke...

you really do want to run at a minimum 1920/1080 any less and you wont see the true power of them gfx cards...
not only that you could buy 1 or eve 2 much better single card for the price of 3 of them cards...
you could get 2 gtx 680 for the same price as 3 560's and get way way more performance.

if you have the chance, return it as soon as possible. even OC'd to 4.6ghz, it wont come close to any of the i5 2xxx series. Even the i3 2100 is better for gaming.

Well the benchmarks test floating point power which is in half but i say overall
4100 vs 2100 4100 wins
8120 vs 2500k 2500k wins
the fx has full integer power which is a good start but i say when it's overclocked thats what i would go with

return and get the 2500k, on 720p you would get insane FPS with a OCed 2500k ;)

pfft, forget floating point power and your opinion. Fact is, even the 8150 cant beat the i3 2100 in gaming most of the time.

with 720P the monitor will limit him to 60FPS anyways with the right Graphics card, so it is like flogging a donky. at that res a 4100 is more that good enough.

in graphics yes but overall no it depends on per core speed but thats like saying the i3 OC'ed can beat a 2500k in a single threaded test
