Hi all,

Recently my GTX295 just overheated and as per ASUS they cannot repair it anymore, which means I will have to get a new card...and in the meantime I want to get a new card which I can use its maximum peformance with my current e8500 at 3.8 ~ 4.0 ghz (i know that my CPU will be a hindering a high end graphic card now, but I still want to get the best for an e8500).... any suggestions please? NVIDIA/ATI will do fine...

My specs:
E8500 @ 3.8 ~ 4.0
8GB ram
Dell 24" @ 1920 * 1080

Please let me know if you need any other inforamtion.

Many thanks! :)

Depends on your PSU, mobo and budget really, Im running the same CPU as you and overclocked at 4Ghz, I'm running 560ti in SLI, it's running great and doesn't appear to be bottlenecking but I'm sure it would run even faster on a new i7 cpu.

because you suggested gtx460 and this one require 2.0 and same for 6850.

Euh, ain't a 6850 a 2.1 card ? 2.0 will work for sure with a 1.0 mobo, 2.1 not always. I also think he has a 2.0 mobo but not sure.

so 2.0 doesn't work on 2.1....!

No my sweet, a 2.1 gpu doesn't allways work with a 1.0 slot. A 2.0 card will. There are no 2.1 mobo slots i believe.

thanks ROBJORDY i thought that this will be same.

Well, according to monsta and sceen, there won't be a bottleneck with even a sli GTX560Ti.
Only you can't sli you have only 1 pcie x16 slot if i'am right.
A GTX 570 should be fine to than. Or a HD 6950. I base this advice on what the others say, don't know enough myself from that.

hell_storm2004: because i am waiting for GTX6 series and the new cpu next year...lol

robjordy: thanks for the advice, yea I will only run 1 card....

Anyway is there any comments with ATI/NVIDIA now? i've been a nivida guy since TNT32... but if the "best" card for my rig will be an ATI , i would give it a try...
thanks

if u can afford then go for gtx 560ti or 6950

if low buget then gtx 460 or ati 6850

more low budget then go for gtx 550ti or ati 6790

these are the choices but only 560ti or 6950 will perfome good in 1080p

thanks (best answer)

You will be fine.

2 things: Be sure to thoroughly remove your old drivers and make sure you purchase a dual-BIOS reference design HD69502GB for around $250.

You will have a high probability of unlocking shaders and creating an HD6970. Your e8500 should not be an issue in the majority of games, and you will pretty much be a gaming monster !!

Guys... I've just bought the ASus 6950 directcuII 2Gb and when I turn my pc on the monitor will be on power save mode.... Just wondering after I plug the power cables what color of the light should I expect? Also I believe my ASus mobo p5q supports it right?

Damn.
Power should be more than enough.
Reading back the thread now i see we never completely made sure your mobo has a 2.0 slot or a 1.0 slot, got distracted by all the 1.0, 2.0, 2.1 discussions.
Have to look in to that. Afraid it's a pcie version problem. Maybe that can be fixed with a bios update but that's not possible now because you have no picture. :(

Btw ; what do you mean with ; Just wondering after I plug the power cables what color of the light should I expect. What light ?

You're sure the monitor is ok ? You said the 295 did die on you, you're sure it was the gpu and not the monitor ?

Yup, that's my mobo, and yea, as per ASUS they said that my GTX295 is dead, so they are willing to refund me some $ (since it is still in warranty).

Furthermore I belive my monitor is fine, since I use it to play my PS3 (HDMI), and after my GTX295 died, a friend of mine lent me his GTX560 which worked fine...

Regarding the light I've mentioned... you know when you plug-in the PCI-e power connectors, the display cards has a light coming out from it? mine is red..

Pfffff.

Don't know about that light, maybe someone else here who has this card ?
I believe you have 4 pcie cables, tried them all 4 ?
Could you try the 6950 with your friends pc ?

Can't think of anything that should prevent it working.

Really hate this, advicing a card and than it doesn't work, though it really should.

Hopefully some other forum members can help with this, i'm quite out of ideas.
