BFG GTX 280 Dead. What do I do now?

Hi All,

I own a BFG GTX 280 video card that has just died. Me, not being on the cusp of the latest technological advancements is why I'm posting this.
The question I have is what is the best matched video card for this older system. Here are the machine specs:

GA-EP45-DS3L LGA 775
Q9550 @ 3.7 Ghz stable
8 GB ddr2 at 880
win 7 64 bit
Corsair TX650
Antec 300

Am I good if I get a GTX 580? Will my machine under utilize this card? Whats the best bang for your buck, or should I retire this machine and start new again?

Games played are BF3, lfd2, cod black ops.

Thanks for taking the time to look at this.

Peter

A better buy for that rig would be the 560Ti. But on the whole you could start to make a new rig, since DDR2 is as good as dead now. So when you go the upgrading way, you ought to be good for quite a while.....
Save up this rig and put any mid level card in it and use it as a standby....

Hi Sabot-cdn,

You would be fine with the GTX 580, Your current setup is a little aged, but it won't hold you back too much. You wouldn't lose more than a few FPS over a newer CPU in most cases.

That way, you replace the part that you need right now, and then in the future, you'll have a beast of a GPU, and you can update the rest of your rig when you see fit.

Most games are still GPU limited as opposed to CPU limited. See this article about CPU scaling in BF3

Thanks to all those that replied and shared their knowledge. The GTX 580 ended up being too much $$$ for me presently, so I opted for the GTX 560 ti by ASUS.
Things are back up and running again. BF3 on high settings looks and feels great. Ultra.... almost.. but not if you want something close to 60 fps.

Thanks again!
