Comparison of these gaming builds

AMD a8-3850
4GB RAM
ATI HD 6850 (1GB)

vs.

i5-2400
4GB RAM
nvidia GTX550Ti

vs.

i5-2500
4GB RAM
nvidia GTX 550 (non-Ti)

Also, would a GTX 560 be a very significant leap over the 550 or the HD 6850?

  1. I would stretch the budget a bit and put the 6850 with the i5-2400. The 2400 is only 10% slower than the 2500, and still faster than the A8-3850. You will be very pleased with your purchase. The 550 cards are slower than the 6850.

    You can view this chart to see how the graphics stack up.

    And this one for the CPU's. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-overclocking,3077-5.html
  2. i5 - yes
    GTX 550 - no, it sucks. Get the 6850 or 6790

  4. Yes, the 560 Ti is a huge leap over 550 /6850 .... it's a very popular proce point and both AMD and nVidia have dozens of cards in this price segment, all slightly different. The factory OC'd 6950's and 560 Ti's are the way to go.

    Guru3D uses the following games in their test suite, COD-MW, Bad Company 2, Dirt 2, Far Cry 2, Metro 2033, Dawn of Discovery, Crysis Warhead. Total fps (summing fps in each game @ 1920 x 1200) for the various options in parenthesis (single card / SL or CF) are tabulated below along with their cost in dollars per frame single card - CF or SLI:

    $ 155.00 6850 (371/634) $ 0.42 - $ 0.49
    $ 170.00 6870 (434/701) $ 0.39 - $ 0.49
    $ 240.00 6950 Frozr OC (484/759) $ 0.50 - $ 0.63
    $ 320.00 6970 (526/825) $ 0.61 - $ 0.78
    $ 215.00 560 Ti - 900 Mhz (495/862) $ 0.43 - $ 0.50

    The 560 Ti above will give you a 33% increase in fps (371 -> 495).....+$60

    The first one: a8 3850 with 6850 is the best for gaming to answer your question.
    More times than not, the graphic card will have a bigger impact on gaming than the processor.
  6. Would there be any issues with combining an Intel processor with Ati GPU and vice versa?

    No issue.
  8. Thanks for the answers. Just one more question, I'm looking at different options now so my list has changed a bit. The only difference is between processors as I would like to stick with the Ati HD 6850 (GTX560 way out of my budget)

    New processors:
    FX - 4100

    vs.

    A8-3850

    and......

    i5-2400

    vs.

    i5-2500

    I realise i5 has the AMD beat so I ask by how much? It's a $100-150 difference and I'm thinking GPU is more important?
