Not to sound like a commercial for the Fuji film F10, but after reading the
review on dpreview, it was refreshing to see the direction they're going
with the the noise issue on compacts. It handled ISO 400 well and even
usable 800. 1600 was a stretch. Certainly no SLR, but it is progress for the
compacts. Hopefully, for Fuji, this is the end of their interpolation
gimmickry. The F10 is more entry level, but the new processor and sensor
will likely show on more capable models.
I'd guess they're using more complex algorithms, such as in Neat Image to
clean up the pictures? Of course, you can always clean up some of the noise
on the computer. I'd be interested in seeing a comparison of a post
processed image to its in camera processing.

The new king of the sub-SLRs has just been anointed! I am eagerly looking
forward to a replacement of the pocketable (just; size of three audio
cassette boxes taped together), optical viewfinder sighted and fully
manually configurable Fujifilm FinePix E550, which logically should have
this same 5th generation SuperCCD HR ( the current one has the 4th) and the
new edition of the processing engine.
