Hello,

I have this Core2 Duo system, Win 7, Core 2 Duo 3.0 CPU, 4x Ram ( PC5200 @ 667mhz ).

I want to upgrade to the best possible Dell CPU series, 8x RAM, and Vid Card w/out causing any issues to the stock system MB or Bios.
As for the CPU, I think mine is the Q6700 series, but heard there are better versions for both the Core 2 Duo & Core 2 Quad.

Does anyone have any further info regarding the above, and what works best with my system.
Thanx, Joe

This is the list of processors which will work in your Optiplex

N652J 3.00GHz Yorkfield Quad Core Q9650, 12MB
F886J 2.83GHz Yorkfield Quad Core Q9550 12MB, 1333FSB, E0
N650J 2.66GHz Yorkfield Quad Core Q9400, 6MB, 1333FSB, R0

Those 3 above were validated by Dell engineers, and below the rest of general processors from another list.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 Processor (2.66GHz, 8MB L2 cache, 1066MHz FSB, VT)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor (2.4GHz, 8MB L2 cache, 1066MHz FSB, VT)

Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 Processor (3.0GHz, 4MB L2 cache, 1333MHz FSB, vPro, VT)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Processor (2.66GHz, 4MB L2 cache, 1333MHz FSB, vPro, VT)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 Processor (2.33GHz, 4MB L2 cache, 1333MHz FSB, vPro, VT)

Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 Processor (2.4GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 Processor (2.2GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 Processor (2.0GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)

Intel Core 2 Duo E2180 Processor (2.0GHz, 1MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E2160 Processor (1.8GHz, 1MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E2140 Processor (1.6GHz, 1MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)

Intel Celeron 440 Processor (2.0GHz, 512K L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
Intel Celeron 430 Processor (2.0GHz, 512K L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)

The easiest way to find your motherboard and chipset info - get CPUZ, it will tell you all you need to know.

Now, the above list would work, if you look elsewhere, you might find that more CPU should be supported - don't go this way, Dell BIOS would not support extra choices.

I think you have enough Quads offers to beat you Core2 Duo.

BIOS must be Updated BEFORE trying a CPU. Not all models are supported.

Now a little bit about the memory.

This is the guaranteed to work - Dell validated 8GB of DDR2-667 (PC2-5300) and DDR2-800 (PC6400) non-ECC memory. DDR2-1066Mhz PC2-8500/8600 is not supported.

What form factor you have MT, DT or SFF types? If it MT (Mini Tower) - PC2 8500 is supported.

Anything else?

Hey Cin & kisianik,

I do have the Optiplex 755 Mid-Tower, and will let you know if I have any further questions, and what I decided to upgrade.

Thanx again for the provided info...

UPDATE regarding Video Card, which will work on your original power supply.

Unfortunately no card that is more than 7.5 inches long or 2 slots wide will PHYSICALLY FIT inside the case - it was found that only single bracket video card can fit due to BTX MOBO, where card internals facing upward towards PC internals, not ATX, where dual card design is blocking another PCI slot by facing downward.

If you prefer the card with beefier fan, then the length of the card must not exceed 7.5 inches, otherwise only "skinny" single bracket, single slot cards can physically fit.

Pictures below will prove my point.

View shows no room for dual bracket

Single bracket only, or you have to cut dual bracket in half

Here you can clearly see only single place for the bracket

This is the picture of actual "skinny" single slot video card (not sure which model)- perfect, "glove" fit.

So, I found 2 GDDR5 7750 cards (GDDR5 is better than GDDR3, even if GDD3 offers 2 GB RAM), which confirmed in reviews to fit Optiplex gx620, 745 and 755 cases (the difference between those models are different processors).

Skinny, flimsier in terms of construction, completely single slot XFX 7750 http://www.amazon.com/XFX-DisplayPort-PCI-Express-FX775AZNP4-FX-775A-ZNP4/dp/B007Z3T5JC

A bit beefier cooler, not as skinny, more durable in construction PowerColor AX7750 http://www.amazon.com/PowerColor-AX7750-1GBD5-DH-Video-Graphics/dp/B00775OC28/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1362783129&sr=8-1&keywords=AX7750+1GBD5-DH

I cannot say which one of those 2 is better, both are good and got less bad reviews related to structural build.
I saw recent recommendation regarding drivers "Changing to the just-released AMD catalyst 13.2 BETA driver improved performance noticeably in just about every game" posted 03/05/2013.

If you had previously NVIDIA card or NVIDIA chip - drivers have to be completely uninstalled prior to installing ATI card.

This is it.

Hello Kisianik,

Thanx for the additional info regarding Vid Cards...

*Update*
Purchased these below and will be getting in next week.

- Upgraded to the Core 2 Duo E8400 ( slight upgrade from 4M to 6M ), probably won't see any difference.

- Upgraded to Samsung 8x Ram PC6400 @ 800Mhz.

Next-up will be to either, keep my Video Card, or upgrade to one of the Vid Cards you have suggested that best works for my 300 PS.

However, I did notice that when I clicked on the properties for my ATI HD 2400 Pro Video Card, that a error message appeared ( MSCV100 is missing ), and I cant view the properties.
Awhile ago, I purchased the Software for the ATI HD 2400 Video Card ( figured that my system didn't have one installed ) to see if that was the issue, but Win 7 rejected it ( saying; 'Software not compatible with Win 7 Drivers...or something like that )...Come to find out the Software I purcahsed is only for Win XP.
So Basically, I have a Video Card that works w/o any software installed so I could view the Mgr, Catalyst, etc.
Why am I getting a message that MSVC100 is missing ? what does it mean.
At the moment I'm trying to download ATI HD 2400 Drivers for Win 7 from this site below to see if it helps:

Any other help will be appreciated.
