I found a message from 2001 but it may not apply any more. Anyway, my system has started to lockup at random times. Hitting the panic button is the only way to break out.
I have a Maxtor 80 GB IDE drive, model 6Y080PO. According to the Seagate disk utility, the temp is 253F. all other temps (mobo, case, cpu) are well under 100F. IS they high temp the reason or is something else to blame. The box is a CoolerMaster Centurion. According to Speed Fan 4.28, the drive temps are at 75F.

Open the case and try to put your hand on the hard drive, opposite of the controller side, is it really hot? Is the inside of the case hot? Is the PC in a room where air can easily circulate? If not try moving the PC in a room which is cooler, if it stops chrashing, then it is a heat or heat dissipation problem.

Speed fan show 23C for drive, 34C for the CPU, 25C for mobo, and 24C for the second drive. The fan on the power supply is blowing cool air out as is the momo fan.

I don't understand, so the Seagate utility says the temp of the first drive is 253 Farenheit? That's crazy because it means some components of the drive will almost melt. Did you touch it when it operates, I am not sure I understood correctly.

The message was something like HD exceeds temperature 253F.
The other night I was listening to some tunes with WMP11 and suddenly a very loud squawk came of the speakers, like a short circuit in a stereo, and then the PC froze. Connected? CPU temp was 35C.

75f is WAY too hot for a HD. open the case and feel the top of your HD while your system is running.
if its warm to the touch -- your temps are fine.
if its too hot to touch, then you need to find a way to cool the drive before it cooks itself and dies.

Although i suspect the odd messages from your seagate utility are indicating something really is wrong -- weather hardware or a corrupted pgm, its hard to tell.
