Getting proper 5.1 through Graphics card

Forum Graphics & Displays : Graphics Cards Getting proper 5.1 through Graphics card

Hi I currently have an MSI GTX 460 Cyclone 1GB/OC connected to my receiver via mini HDMI adapter -> HDMI connection and I was wondering how I might be able to setup proper 5.1 sound. When I play games I hear the center, left and right channels correctly, but the rear surrounds sound very low and muffled (forced) and the front speakers play sounds that are behind me just as loud as if they were infront of me. For example, if someone is speaking behind me on my left, I'll hear the sounds in left front speaker loudest. Is there any workaround for this?

Current config:

MSI GTX 460 Cyclone 1GB/OC
Windows XP 32 Bit
XFX nforce 780i SLI

Make sure onboard sound is disabled then update the sound driver for the videocard. Once both of those are done make sure you have 5.1 decode set for the chanel you are on on the reciever AKA DVD/BlueRay or wherever you pluuged it in. Sounds to me like it is set to 3.1 or some other setting and is not decoding correctly. Also go into the soundcard settings in control panel and make sure it is sending 5.1 also.

Good luck

I tried those and I still can't seem to get it to work...I also don't have a sound card, I'm only outputting through the graphics card via the HD audio driver and an HDMI cable.

I have my receiver connected to an HDTV...does that matter?

Also, do P/C's decode audio differently from PS3's/Blue rays or something? I can never seem to get it to do what I expect it to.
