I went through the manuals for my refurbished Dimage 5400... then I
went through roof.

Seems I should have gotten the 5400II instead. The 5400 has no digital
ROC. Dangit, that's what I bought it for. I have 1000+
family color slides, and some are faded (especially the ones going back
to the 50's).

I heard so much good stuff about the 5400, I assumed rectifying color
was a feature. (duhhhh?)

So, should I return the 5400 and replace it with a 5400II ? ...

.... or does the 5400 have features that can, with a little more work,
do essentially the same thing as digital ROC? (This "Pixel Polish"
stuff?)

There are other programs around that do this with varying degrees of
success, I think Silverfast has it, or try Vuescan (www.hamrick.com).
I like Vuescan even though it has a fairly long learning curve. The
standard version (no raw files, no IT8 calibration) is $50, and you can
try it out before purchase (it watermarks your image) so you will be
able to see how successful it is.

I have ROC as a Photoshop plugin. I believe it's still available. I
believe it works as well as the scanner-integral version (it's not
dependent on special scanner hardware the way ICE is). So that might
be an option for you. I do find it very useful. Not 100%, but for
the slides it works well on, it does better than I can do by other
methods.

Wow, thanks for the info. Might not have to send it back after all.

Now, this Silverfast, and Vuescan and Photoshop... do they work
actively with the 5400 scanner? Or do they work best on the images
after the 5400 has done its work with the ICE and everything else?

Glad I could help.

Silverfast and Vuescan are alternative scanner drivers, essentially;
replacing (or supplementing) Nikon Scan. The Minolta Scan Elite 5400
is on the Vuescan compatibility list.

ROC is not done inside the scanner; it's not a scanner feature, but
solely done in software. SilverFast has an equivalent feature called
ACR (Adaptive Colour Restoration, see
http://www.silverfast.com/highlights/acr/en.html), which will enable
you to bring back faded out colours as ROC does. They support the
5400; you can try it out before purchasing it.
