if anyone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated :)  also is it definitely worth it to buy the more expensive one?

More about : cpu work

According to the HP support page, only AM2+ CPU upgrades are supported on that (proprietary) board, while the two CPUs listed use socket AM3. It also says the CPU that ships with the PC is AM3, which is a bit odd. To be on the safe side I'd go with the "safer" choice of an AM2+ CPU to be more certain of compatibility.

You can use neither of the two CPU's because they are socket AM3, whereas your motherboard is socket AM2+ and will only use socket AM2+ CPU's. The limit for your board is this CPU which is no longer sold.

When searching on newegg filter AM2+ socket on the left side when searching for CPU

There's only one on newegg, which is a mediocre single core Sempron.

i thought that am3 processors were able to work on am2+ mobos tho?

That's true only if the motherboard supports it, which unfortunately, yours does not.

that is what i didnt understand, i might just wing it but it would be a big waste of money because newegg dosent have a return policy on cpu's

I've seen a lot of am2+ motherboards that don't mention anything about am3 support but will run a am3 CPU.

But you have a proprietary motherboard so it could be different.

FYI am3+ definitely won't work

It really depends on the motherboard.
I have a biostar board that only supports Phenon2 940 and below cpus. A 955, 965 AM2+ processors will boot but the board then stops with a warning. Unknown CPU and will not boot any farther.
It all depends on bios support.
