PSU Suggestions

Hey everyone, I am going to be building a new computer soon and would like some opinions as to both a brand and how powerful the PSU will need to be for this system.

I considered using my current Ultra X3 1k watt psu but it is getting up in years (3) and I am not sure I want to put it to task with the newer hardware I am considering; it may also not have all of the connectors I may need.

So, first I guess you will need the hardware I am going to be using:

MB: Asus Rampage IV Extreme
CPU: Intel Core I7 3930K
Ram: G. Skill Ripjaws Series 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 1066Mhz
GFX Card: XFX Radeon HD 7970 Black Edition 3GB
Case: Inwin Dragon Rider
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

What I am looking for is a modular PSU that will have some headroom/enough connections for future upgrading (such as a x-fired 7970) and that holds up well to extended periods of usage. Thanks.

For a high end build like that with 2 x HD 7970s I would look at a quality 850w power supply. Corsair, Seasonic, PC Power and Cooling, XFX, Silverstone, Enermax, OCZ and Antec are all good brands.

What anort said also use the PSU calc and add about 50w (so you are not going to run too close)

Even though not all Ultra PSUs are top quality, your X3 is a well reviewed product by reputable sites including Johnnyguru: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=41
With 70A on the 12V rail it is sufficient for your rig and your planned upgrade to CF 7970s. Save yourself some money and stick with your current PSU.

i am no a fan of of ultra products but after going through the johnyguru review,i think that is a great unit.no need to change.johnyguru is a very reliable review site.
