CPU installation, windows wont start

I have HP s5220y

I installed a intel core 2 duo 7600 and when I went to turn on my computer, windows would not boot, it will bring you to the start up repair screen.
Strangley Bios recognizes the cpu and the hardware digonostic tool says everything is functioning.

I called HP and they said that i had to order a new copy of windows.

Do i really have to do this, no where online was i told in order to replace a cpu iwould need to buy a new operating system!!

You just threw a new CPU in and booted it? My guess is the 5000 series and the 7000 series have different chipset drivers or something along those lines and you need to get the one out of there first.

Well that would definately solve the driver issue, but a touch overkill most likely.

I suspect what has happened is this.

You installed CPU.

First Boot asked you to go into BIOS as CPU has changed.

You did and in doing so set the BIOS to default settings.

That would have switched the SATA controller to IDE Mode. Win 7 was likley installed under AHCI mode. (Or vica versa).

Go into BIOS and switch you controller back to AHCI. Windows will probably boot after that.

so i did a system restore, and it worked for a day, but now after i restarted it, windows wont start, and i only get a black screen with a blinking underscore

Ok im making progress!! So i went to the boot menu and when i click to boot from the harddrive, windows boots!!

So why cant it straight up boot with out having to go to the boot menu??

Did you put in a new motherboard or no? What was your old CPU?

I don't have much experience with branded computers, either, so I suppose it's always possible that the problem is that they keyed the operating system to the original hardware and it simply won't work with any hardware upgrades.

Either way, doesn't sound like your CPU is bad - something else is the problem.

I have had dell admit before that their O.S. is somehow coded to the hardware ( issue long ago ...can't remember it that well) - it will only work that that hardware, so you can't just use the disk in another machine or upgrade freely. This is how they make their money.

It sounds like to me that this is the case - time to reinstall as everyone is suggesting.

LATEST UPDATE!! So i installed the windows 8 beta and everything is running awesome, and very stable.

Just one problem, the dvd drive wont read disks, i dont get it, iinstalled windows 8 with the damn dvd drive.

So does windows 8 need a different driver of something?

I mean if this is just an internet computer go grab a copy of Unbuntu or another Linux distro and skip having to shell out 150$ for an OS.

Also one important thing, If you have the Key on the top of your HP - ( Product key) call microsoft and they will mail you a disk for free.
