what do I need to rig up an old gvc laptop screen with my desktop? I'm handy with a soldering iron, I know I need some type of converter. The laptop is a gvc flexnote (green) 759.

how costly? I enjoy mods and would hate to see a good screen go to waste. I'd be willing to spend up to $150 on it that would be much cheaper than going out and paying 400 for the same size of screen. I don't have the cash now but I'd like to price it out for later.

I seriously doubt you could do that for $150.

The LCD part of the display is simply a matrix of cells that need to be turned on and off in monitor scan-line fashion to make the display work. You would have to design and build a complete memory/scan/control system for it... You could probably buy 2 devent LCD monitors for what it would cost you... never mind the time you'd be putting in.

As much as I love DIY electronics, some projects just aren't worth the trouble.

I saw a kit for it a while ago. it included "everything you need to make any laptop screen work with your desktop" it was like $180 I can't find it now. I'm not talking about building the whole thing from scratch, that is beyond my skills. Just looking for an easy way out I suppose. I may just be doomed to pay the full price one day...

Tell you what... I got a couple of dead laptops laying around... if you ever do find that kit again, drop me a private note with a link to it... If it's only a couple of hundred bucks I might like to give it a try too!

One thing I've always wanted to experiment with was a half height case like this one with a fold down LCD screen mounted right on top and a mini keyboard that tucks in with the screen when it's closed. Add a carry handle and you've got a portable desktop computer.

yes I will send you a tell, I've been meaning to put my server into an aluminum briefcase. It would be very nice to have an lcd attached to the inside of the top of it to just open up and run at lan parties...ohhh and a tray that folds out with a keyboard and maybe a way to integrate a touchpad from my dead laptop into it. Yes I am going to be looking very hard for this kit.

The touchpad isn't a problem. Several companies make free standing touchpads that plug into the PS/2 mouse port and you can get keyboards with touchpads built in.

The briefcase idea is interesting. Lcd in the lid, keyboard in a tray under the drives... Hmmmmmmm....

Speaking of making a controller system, I think in the upcoming weeks a friend of mine and I will be working on a project involving an RC car and a hi res vid camera that we will use to navigate. Planning also on setting up a few other components like speedomoter and power level indicator which I intend on making a controller for a small lcd screen I ripped off somewhere. This'll be an interesting experiments, will post pics with it:)
