PSU Buzzing/Whining Sound

Whats up community,

So I just upgraded several components in my computer (Mobo, CPU, RAM) and everything is running great and smooth except now my PSU is making this high pitched buzzing/whining sound. Interestingly enough, when I start playing video games the sound diminishes and only comes back ever so often, but when I am just futzing around on the desktop or surfing the web, its their non stop. Although the sound is annoying, its manageable, but my main concern is that their might be something wrong with the PSU. I checked to make sure all the connections were solid and I know for a fact that the sound is coming from the PSU and not the GPU. The PSU is at least 6 years old and it is an Ultra brand 750w. My question to you fine folk is does anyone know why this is and if so can it be fixed? If it can't be fixed is it a hazard to my new components and if it is a hazard can you recommend a PSU that would work (preferably modular)? Thanks in advance for any help!

Current Specs:
CPU: i5 2500k
RAM: Cosair Vengence 8GB DDR3 1600
PSU: Ultra (Don't know model) 750w
GPU: EVGA GTX 460 768 MB
Case: NZXT Phantom 410
HDD: 1x80GB Seagate 1x500GM WD
CD: Standard Optical

More about buzzing whining sound
  1. That's what exactly happened with the my Antec TPQ 850W, but that happened after 1 week of purchase. I had to RMA it, that sound is probably from one of the solid capacitors, when it gets defected it makes that sound.
  2. It's likely coil whine; best solution is to RMA. Sometimes whine only happens at certain load levels and that can explain the intermittent nature of your whine.
