I have been having fps spiking issues for the past few weeks while playing league of legends. I started noticing having similiar issues in Team fortress 2 and counterstrike source. My CPU cores are overheating to above 90 C while running these games, but while I'm playing world of warcraft they remain ~50-55 C.

What would cause certain games to overheat my CPU and other games not to?

I have a 3.3ghz i-5 2500 (sandy-bridge)

6 gigs of ram, but running 32-bit so only 3.5 usable.

Have an nvidia geforce gtx 560 ti

750W thermaltake Power supply

Have 4 case fans and a cpu fan that came with the processor.

Is this a factory built system or did you build it? What are you using to read your temps? Check to be sure the CPU fan is spinning free and not obstructed. Also, the thermal compound between CPU and heat sync may not be applied correctly. Remove the HSF, clean surfaces with something like Arctic Cleaner, and apply new thermal compound (like Arctic Silver 5).

The max operating temp for the i5-2500 should not exceed 72.6C
