Hard drive problem

Ok, I have 2 older(both maxtor's) hard drive. In my comp right now I have a single WD 15gb drive installed on IDE #1. When I install the maxtor #1(model # 86480d6) as a slave(on the same cable), everything works good, no problems. But, when I set the jumpers for maxtor #2(model # 85120A8) as slave, my comp wont boot. Theres a screen that shows info on HD's, and it says 1 primary slave, but no primary master. I didnt change anything after installing the first maxtor(which worked). Accoridng to maxtor.com, the jumper settings for the HD's to be slaves are the same. Now my question is, what could the problem be? Is it some sort of hard drive failure? Or is it a problem with my setup, or could it be whats on the drive? Thanks!

alot of newer IDE drives have jumper settings for master by itself and master with a slave device, which might be it.

WD model?
