Gaming build / First time builder

Hello! I just wanted to post the build I am looking at. Maybe get some critique on it. Maybe you guys can help me shave off a few bucks without any performance drops or the rig dying on me in a year.

Please don't tell me to change to a Intel CPU, Ive made up my mind on this CPU. Also, I went with a fairly cheap GPU because I plan on upgrading when the newer ones come out.

  1. Switch from the 8 core 3.1Ghz FX8120 to the 4 core 3.4Ghz Phenom II X4 965 and save $73.
Fold that $73 savings over in the GPU.

You picked a 2.5" laptop hard drive instead of 3.5" desktop hard drive.

    Everything else looks pretty good.
  2. Lol, woops! Thank you very much! So I plan on over clocking whatever I do get. With that, Do you think I should still get a PIIx4 or a 6 core?
  3. I just noticed the quad core 3.6Ghz AMD FX-4100 Zambezi is selling @ $110
Thats a $100 savings over the octo-core FX8120 and gaming performance should run almost identical.

  4. I'm afraid, like most of the folk on this forum, I am obliged by an oath to keep silent in this, or risk being accused of miss-recommending a CPU.
  5. Updated:

So, I went with the FX-4100 and that dropped the price a lot. I found a new hard drive with about the same specs but 1TB instead of 500GB so thank you for making me look again!

Now if you could help me with a new GPU. With the price drops I can afford a 250-300 dollar GPU now. I don't need multiple monitors or anything. There's just too many to choose from! What would be the best in this price range?
  6. In that price range I think the HD 6950s are a great option.
Is there any particular game you're building the system for? A few games have a bias toward AMD or Nvidia hardware.
  7. Definitely Skyrim, Diablo 3, SW: TOR. But I would like to play pretty much anything. But for those three in particular, I would like to play on the ultra settings side.

THG has benchmark reviews on Skyrim and SW:TOR. Your CPU/GPU combo should handle both with max graphic settings.
