Hello All,

I just wanted to know if there was a way to tell if a CPU was overclocked. I'm trying to purchase an i5-2500K from this mom & pop store near me and they have a decent price for it. They told it was just a 1-day return etc. Thanks and I appreciate the input.

You can't. OC settings are on the system BIOS, not internal to the chip. Once removed there is no record of the settings on the CPU.

Have them put the CPU in a machine and show you that it works, that would be my route.

Is this a brand new CPU in the original retail packaging? Also, the reputation of the mom and pop store would be important to me.

OEM tray CPUs are handled by store employees and others in the supply chain. There is no telling whether they use adequate anti-static handling methods. This is why I generally prefer the 'retail' packaging and choose a reputable store.
