PC boots, but screen doesn't stay on

Hello,
My PC is custom built by my brother and myself. It will boot up fine until it reaches the windows part (makes it past start up selection screen). I can't get the screen to show even when I try to start in safe mode. I think it is getting to windows, but it only shows the cursor and nothing more. Please offer your advice.
