I have a gateway and when i turn it on the screen is black

My computer comes on, but no picture or the screen is black. Its os is windows 98 its old but got a lot of very important file on it I would like to save. A friend said it was my video card and would cost too much to fix, can you tell me what it might be?

  1. Probably is the video card, if it is that old, getting a replacement should be hard as plenty of them on ebay going for pennies. If its on the motherboard, as a lot of older Gateway systems had, might be a problem.
