My Bose headphones have a loud hum when I switch them on. It doesn't matter whether or not they're plugged in. Any ideas?

Its the raw power surging through the magnets,
ready to blow your aural receptors to hell and back screaming :)
Plus you may be getting interference from another strong field nearby, speakers, fridge Tv etc
is it a constant hum or does it alter if you move the headphones around?

Constant hum unaffected by moving around the room.

Try them in another environment, take them to work or a friends house see if it persists,
Maybe Bose's C.S. dept would have more specific answers but if there is a problem you should be able to RMA pretty simply

Could be a fault with the Active Noise Isolation Unit in the headphones. Try contacting Bose about it.
