had simmilar probs, in my case it was the vid drivers. i wiped 2000 and re-installed it, got new vid drivers and never had the problem since.

also you might want to head over here and get the compatability update, it should be all the way at the bottom. i would get this as the last thing, after all OS installs like SP2 and alike.

Download the latest nVidia drivers for your video card and see if that fixes it.http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=drivers

I'm getting some really funky lockups too. I'm not sure who's a$$ to beat: Via, Msft, or Nvidia. I'm thinking about calling all three's tech support and telling them to 'go cut me off a switch to beat your a$$ with.'

Anyway, I'm not sure if it's the 4.36 4n1, or the 23.11 drivers I'm using. I've gone drastic (everything down to 'default' in the bios and drivers), and checking it out now. If it's not the drivers, it's gotta' be Jupiter's moon, or the phase-variance in the neoplastic reside of the moon's preumbra...

something...

I have not used the 4.36 VIA yet because everything is working. What nVidia drivers were you using before 23.11?

I think the 23.10's, 21.90's, then like the 16's before that. I just made my new setup disk this last weekend. I've used it so much, I have my Win2k setup serial memorized. If I had upgraded to xp, and had to deal with authentication to get full use of my computer, I'd go nukin futz. I'd have to club sum baby seals, and run a bus load of nuns off a bridge to get any satisfaction. It's driven me up the wall, across the ceiling, and I'm halfway down the other side; at least the couch is there...

I may have cured the problem though, but I'm still testing. It's been up for a little over 7 hours now, but I've not had the chance to check out the vid card (Icewind Dale and Maximum Pain are calling my name later this evening). I just swung by http://www.viaarena.com and stocked up on drivers. I have *NO* idea what the heck I just loaded, but I loaded'em.

4n1, agp, bus master, miniport, ac97. I think there was 6 or 7; I lost count.

Via rulez. Actually, if you look at it from a technical/marketing/monopolistic aspect, Ntel rulez...Via is just a serf.

Did it work?

Nope. Didn't survive for 24 hours. Came back, and it was lockedup.

So........Win2k sp2, Asus a7v133, nvidia 23.11, and 4n1 4.36 don't mix. At least, not well.

*sigh*

Good thing I still have another bottle of wine in the house...

Well, now you can have fun.

I read from someone else's recommendation in the Anandtech forums that it's better to use the 21.83 drivers instead. That fixed his problems. You can try that, since you didn't mention anything about those.

Hey, your problem sounds like mine. I too get frequent freezing when playing games. It freezes once and a while when I'm using apps. It's weird.. the drivers are not the problem at all I think.

For me it was that Win2k AGP patch from amd, in fact, it is a registry modification, you can download it from here :

Hope that helps!
