Need advice on a new build i5 2500k

Approximate Purchase Date: within 2 weeks

Budget Range: 900

System Usage from Most to Least Important: graphic design, flash, playing movies, internet

Parts Not Required: keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers, OS

Preferred Website(s) for Parts:, microcenter

Country: USA

Parts Preferences: 2500k

Overclocking: probably not, but will if need be

SLI or Crossfire: maybe

Additional Comments: Have microcenter nearby for cpu. Have a blue ray burner on my current pc that i can swap out into new pc, just need a standard cd-rom to put in old pc.

Intel 2500k

ASRock Fatal1ty P67 Performance LGA 1155 Intel P67

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1600

SAPPHIRE 100314-3L Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit

Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s
(comes with dvd burner)

Case/PSU: (not dead set on case but seemed like a decent deal)
Thermaltake Smart SP-630P 630W ATX 12V 2.3 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply

CPU Cooler:
CORSAIR CWCH60 Hydro Series

Price Before tax: 855.92

Computer is mainly used for work (web and graphic designing) not a huge gamer but would be nice to have the option. I also just like to concept of water cooling but not dead set on it.

Please advise.

Thank you all in advance for your input and for taking the time to look at my post.

  1. My advice is to change the graphic card with this 560Ti , it fit in your budget and is much better than 6870 :
    Its a verry good build.
  2. You might consider buying your Motherboard from Micro Center as well. Right now they are offering a $50 discount when you buy the I5 2500K and any Motherboard together. That's on top of their unbeatable price on the I5 2500K at $179.99. This will allow you to spend more money elsewhere.
  3. Ok,

    Changed mobo:
    P67 Extreme4 Gen3 LGA 1155 P67 ATX Intel Motherboard
    99.99 after $50 off

    Changed video card to:
GIGABYTE GV-N560UD-1G GeForce GTX 560 Ti

    any other suggestions?
  4. i would look into a z68 motherboard. its everything the p67 has but with more features.

also you really ought to ditch that water cooler. at that price range there are atleast a handful of air coolers that are better then it. like the noctua nh-d14
  5. yes, I wasn't sure about the water cooler. I liked the idea of being able to pipe the heat outside the case but wasn't sure if it was worth the price
  6. If graphic design is your main concern I would actually upgrade to either the 2600 or 2600k if you want to overclock. More threads with this chip set over the 2500k. Programs like photo shop will take advantage of that.
  7. trust me i would like to get the 2600 but the extra $100 is a bit much for me right now
  8. what abouttheis for cpu cooler:
  9. Best answer
    i7 2600k $280
    Asrock Z68 Pro3-m $110
    -$50 deal
    Gigabyte GTX 560ti $210
GSkill Value series 8gb ram $37
    LG 22x $18
    Cooler Master 212 $30
    Case $135
    Hitachi 500gb $70
    Antec ECO 620w $60

Total: $900 Besides the Processor and MB, everything else is from Newegg. If you were to find a cheaper case, then you could change the GTX 560ti to a GTX 560ti 448 which is close in performance to the GTX 570.
  10. ^^^ the hyper 212 is not a good choice for that cpu especially after an overclock.
