Hi

I am looking for a zoom lense for my S5100 for closeups of birds and aquatic
creatures.

Fuiji doesn't offer much of a selection so was wondering if there are 3rd
party lenses, I believe it has a 52mm adapter.

Also I want to take pics of a boat is there any tip on compensating for the
motion?

Thanks
Jim

I believe that you're understanding of the S5100 is a little off.
It does not allow the lens to be changed. It does come with an
adapter ring, but that is to allow the attachment of an adapter lens
in front of the Fuji's fixed zoom lens. This is already a 10x zoom,
giving the equivalent of a 37mm to 370mm zoom on a 35mm camera.
Fuji's TL-FX9 adapter lens extends the telephoto end of the zoom by
a factor of 1.5x, to an equivalent of a 555mm lens.

Take the pictures in bright sunlight. The brighter the better, as
it will allow you to use a faster shutter speed. So will using a
higher ISO setting. Just as with a pendulum, when motion reverses
direction speed is at a minimum. You might want to prefocus (to
minimize shutter delay) and take the picture close to the instant
that the boat's motion is at it's ebb. The motion is fairly complex
so it's unlikely you'll ever be able to capture the boat when
there's no movement at all, but you can probably eliminate much of
it with proper timing, and if your camera is quick enough.

If you mean taking pictures from a boat, you might want to try one of the
newer image stabilised cameras. If you mean pictures of a boat in fast
motion, try developing a panning technique (and using minimum shutter
speed).

Yes I am a newbie to this camera, I understand that one adds an adapter
lense as I have added a wide angle lense.

A particular shot that I would like to get is of an eagle in the nest, video
if possible, I see them from a distance (2,000 ft.+ ) all the time in the
boat. I'm not sure if fuji's 1.5 adapter will be powerfull enough to get a
close up shot.

Any Thoughts

I don't think you're going to find an affordable or workable
solution with the eagle at that distance. An 8x adapter (if you
could find one) would give you the equivalent length of a 3000mm
telephoto. That would enlarge the eagle quite a bit, but it still
wouldn't come close to filling the frame. The aperture would be
reduced significantly, requiring much longer shutter speeds. The
camera motion would be drastically magnified, making the boat
unsuitable as the platform for taking pictures. You'd need to use a
large, solid tripod on firm ground. Adapting a small telescope to
the camera might be feasible, but it wouldn't eliminate the aperture
and camera movement problems. Your best bet is to get much closer,
but that may present problems just as challenging.

The Olympus TCON1.7 is a much sharper teleconvertor than the Fuji. I owned
both for my S7000 when I had it and felt that the fuji was a waste of money.
If you buy the TCON you will have to have the adapter ring (it is supplied
with the S5000 but niot the S7000, not sure about the S5100).
