Photo editing/Gaming/All-purpose build: ~$900

After reading the new build forum for a couple weeks, I think I finally got it narrowed down to the parts I want to put together. My goal is a PC that will last many years (5+) with some upgrade paths for future proofing. I will be using Adobe Lightroom 3 for photo editing and I'm interested in picking up a modern game or two like Skyrim. I WILL NOT be a hard-core, 8 hours a day, gamer...just casual. On with it:

Approximate Purchase Date: ordering parts this week

Budget Range: $800-1000 after rebates

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Internet/ Hacking my Android devices, image processing with Adobe Lightroom3, gaming, office work

Parts Not Required: I need it all! Will probably pick up a keyboard and mouse at the local big box stores but recommendations are welcome.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Newegg, Amazon, Microcenter web only

Country: United States

Parts Preferences: Intel CPU with future-proof mobo, 23" LCD LED-backlit monitor, mid tower case, prefer to pay a little more for better quality parts
Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: No

Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080

Additional Comments: I would like a quiet, somewhat energy efficient PC. Gotta keep the utility bills down ya know!

Here's what I have picked out so far from reading the threads and reviews on Newegg:

CPU: Intel Core i5-2400S Sandy Bridge 2.5GHz (3.3GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 65W

Motherboard: ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

PSU: PC Power and Cooling Silencer MK III PPCMK3S500 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

GPU: SAPPHIRE 100314-3L Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

SSD: Crucial M4 CT064M4SSD2 2.5" 64GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Optical Drive: ASUS 24X DVD Burner - Bulk 24X DVD+R Black SATA Model DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS - OEM

Case: Fractal Design Arc Midi Black High Performance PC Computer Case w/ USB 3.0 and 3 x Fractal High Performance 140mm fans

OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - OEM

Other thoughts:
- I know the 64gb is not enough but should I just wait for prices to stabilize before I buy a HDD? I want either a 500GB or 1TB
- Have no idea what monitor to get but I don't want to spend over about $150
- Does the mobo I have picked out have USB 3.0 on the faceplate since the case I've chosen has a front panel USB 3.0 port?
- I already purchased 8GB of Corsair Vengeance RAM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233186) for $40
- I'm on a wifi only connection since the router is in the other room and I'm in a rental so can't run wires through the wall. Will I need a wireless adapter of some kind? Suggestions...

Thanks in advance for any input .... This forum and site is AWESOME and super helpful for us noobs.

The total for this build would be $1151.91 and while it's over your budget you can easily swap out parts that you want to make it match your budget more.
  2. That particular motherboard does not support front panel USB3.

You can get a 22" or 21.5" FullHD monitor for the $150 or under.
Something with a 5ms response time or lower would be good.

Well you can run like at least 100' of cable too if you so desire instead of a Wifi card. Don't need to go through a wall, just take put in a cable that goes around the edges of the walls to your computer. The cost in either solution is probably about the same.

Can you recommend a mobo of the same caliber that supports front panel USB3?

These will have what you want but it will cost you a few more bucks to get it.
You can run an extension through the case to the rear i/o panel and connect the front usb that way and it would be a little cheaper and I have done that myself.

Thanks for the suggestions but I bought this board this morning from Newegg. Seems they are having a pretty big sale and I got it $10 off. ASUS P8Z68-V LE LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS -$119.99

They also have Win7 64bit OEM for $10 off so $89.99 with a promo code.
  6. Nice deals going on at Newegg, good to see you have the opportunity to pick up what you wanted with a discount yet!
