Hi guys, i am planning a z68 or maybe lga 2011 build, i mainly play games, do video editing and sometimes do school work on it. I am not sure which platform to get also BTW should i wait for the release of IVY bridge or just go for it now.

Your budget is rather "unnecessary". Spend >$2k and save the other $3k for a car or something useful when you finish school :)

SB CPU's currently pack plenty of power, and I can't see Ivybridge providing all that much advantage, especially for gaming. 2500k/2600k can push clock speeds of 4.5GHz+ which is more than enough and aren't even close to bottle-necking GPU's.

My suggested build would be something along the lines of:
SLI/CF ready Z68 motherboard - ASUS P8Z68-v PRO/Extreme4 Gen3 or similar
ATI 7970 GPU - you can add a second card later if more performance is required
850w PSU - Corsair, XFX, SeaSonic or Antec recommended
120GB/124GB SSD
7200RPM HDD - As many TB as you require
Case - of your choice - most Mid/Full tower ATX will be fine
8GB 1600MHz RAM - Dual Channel DDR3 1.5v CL8/CL9
i5-2500k/i7-2600k - You need to decide if hyper threading is worth paying out the extra $100 for. Wont help with gaming, but will with video editing.

Hey adrian, thanks for your reply, but i haven told u i am using a 1366 platform now with a i7 980x with two 480 in sli as well as 6 gb of ram i am just unsure whether to just up in 1 gen. But i can tell you that aside from video/photo editing as well as sometimes some graphics work, my com is ball busting slow in everything else, one of my ram slot on my motherboard isn working anymore so effectively i am forced to use 4gb of ram, also furthermore, my harddrives also on verge of dying, the motherboard is also underperforming when i do benchmarks especially graphics benchmarks, when i play games the frame can drop from 70 to 10 for no reason then after awhile go back to 70, extreme long load in games also.So as i said budget not a problem but i am unsure to up or not. my parents do not really care bout my budget because i am in photography curriculem so i need the CPU firepower. They dun even care if i drop 10k on a mac pro. I mean my Camera and lenses cost more but i am unsure whether its sensible. i do love to play game but shouldnt i wait for ivy bridge or go for sandy bridge E?

The framerate dropping is because of sli. The effect is called microstuttering, when the two cards can't work perfectly in sync, the frame rates drop randomly noticably. I don't really see a reason to wait for ivy bridge but HDD prices are at almost 200% their original retail price right now.

It's all relevant :)

Bottom line really is, there's not too much sense in waiting for Ivybridge when we know very little about it, when there is already a fantastic line of CPU's at a very good price ready and waiting to be bought. Not to mention being tried and tested to the absolute max by just about every enthusiast on this forum.

i3-2100, i5-2500k and i7-2600k are all solid choices.
