What are some of the best DVD's anyone has bought or scene? I recently bought Memento, Count of Monte Cristo, Kiss of the Dragon, and Tommy Boy on DVD. I would recommend atleast a rent of any of these movies if you have not seen them before.

however,

BC, Aliens - Special Edition was also a Great DVD (Added scenes, great sounds)

BTW, not just good movies, but good DVDs. Reason some great movies are not in my list.

The end scene in heat has arguably the best surround sound I have ever heard on a DVD.

Heat has the best shootout scene of any movie, bar none. It was so realistic it was amazing. It was funny, because a couple weeks after I saw that movie, there was that big Hollywood shootout with those bank robbers which was so similar to the movie.

Favorite DVD's are the LOTR Extended Editions. I bought Akira on DVD, which totally sucked because it's subtitled in Engrish. Many of the subtitles are complete nonsense you can hardly understand it.

Willie Wanker and the Fudge Packing Factory
Womb Raider
Buffy the Vampire Layer
The Bare Wrench Project
Lusty Life #89 - Slide your long loaf in my hot oven
Indiana Joan and the Black Hole of Mammoo
Sperms Of Endearment

Some are openly sold in BB. Those reading-challenged idiots replaced it thinking it was original movies.

*shakes head* Coincedence. Not Irony.

Momento is cool. It comes with a medical record of the lead character.
I liked the Terminator 2 ultimate edition dvd. Thats got the best seamless branching of the dvds I've seen.

Generally I just watch the movie and don't bother about the extras.
Aliens DTS box set is good.

I like the Box and DVD covers for Dogma

yeah. BOB is a good one.

The opening of Saving Private Ryan is excellent on DVD 5.1 too - the sound of bullets whizzing all around you is almost enough to have you glancing left and right to see who's firing at you....

I have to agree with those who put forward both the Matrix and Gladiator. Blade Runner is also excellent, but the DVDs offer nothing over any other version. (aside from better quality picture of course)

1. Heat
2. Saving Private Ryan
3. Gladiator
4. Matrix.

I'll see if I can find the link.

> Brotherhood of the Wolf (3 DVD set)

Yay! Excellent movie if you are fluent in french or alternately don't mind subtitles. I'd put it at a level higher than crouching tiger personally, excellent movie that should be highly recommended quite frequently!

and here I thought I'd have to post it up first :P

My other choices would be (animecentric since there doesn't seme to be alot of posts on anime here):

The Family Guy DVDs
Trigun Series DVDs
Neon Genesis Evangelion DVDs (IF you can stand a extremely whiney main character.)
Witch Hunter Robin DVDs
Scryed DVDs
Wolf's Rain DVDs (friend said he saw them out, I originally saw them fansubbed.)

Actually I am fluent in French, my mom is from Quebec, and I spent 11 years in immersion. And my job has a minor aspect of French when dealing with the gov't.

However if you do listen to the English Surround track it is a very seemless job, very well done. My old GF didn't understand French so I went throught the movie (for the 4th time) in English for her, and it wasn't bad at all.

This is one of my hidden jewel movies (sorry to steal your thunder) and shows how so many surround tracks and a good job of dubbing goes a long way. Great movie and a constant, 'have you ever seen....' movie recommendation of mine.
They don't usualy make the effort for dubbing into other languages from English though, only to english, and only if people care (dub of Crouching Tiger is so bad I prefer subtitles).

The Man In The Iron Mask
Tears Of The Sun

Personally, I've watch so much fansub anime that subtitles for me are as good as the english dubbed version in languages I don't know. I really think you loose something of the original in most cases regardless of how well the movie is done if you aren't listening to it in the primary language.

Das boot, crouching tiger hidden dragon, brotherhood of the wolf.

I don't fluently know any of the native languages but think all are well worth the watch sub'd :)

Any other suggestions on 'have you seen...' movies?

Nice DVDs (not great like the others, MOVIES are Great, just not the DVD features,etc);

-Beetles Anthology (good remaster)
-Leon - the Proffesional (SuperBit / Uncut [one of my all time favourites, mediocre DVD features, but it's SuperBit!])
-The Abyss (better ending)
-Toy Story (3 DVD set)
-The GodFather Set.
-La Femme Nikita (original French movie, special edition)

Ones that would be for the GOOD pile, but not necessarily DVD, would be;

-Spirited Away (some nice features, but mainly the story)
-The Cube (a great story, nothing too special about DVD)

-Top Gun was the first to make me apreciate Surround sound.

There are more, but trying to stick to the great ones.

Some nice choices here. I've seen Brotherhood of the Wolf and thought it was really good. Once I get some more money i plan on getting Donnie Darko, Equilibrium, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Reply to muc0n

I have Donnie Darko, great movie. Not a 'great' dvd but good enough. The movie is very good though. Good mind play.

Equillibrium is a VERY good movie and DVD at times, very visually stunning. The plot lags sometimes, but very entertaining, and the DVD does keep alot of the feeling from the theatre. The fight scenes benifit alot from surround sound. Alot of contrast in the movie which is sharp, but doesn't lose anything on VHS. Good movie though. Prefer American Psycho for subtle visuals though (Mmm shinney axe, and very crisp business card  , the blood is also very RED and shinney  ).

Pi really lagged for me. It was quirky and interesting, but I had a problem remaining engaged.

BraveHeart was a pretty good dvd (Mmm crunchy bones).

The Back To The Future set dissapointed me. Not enough extra features for my taste (considering how big a release this was hyped as), also early transfer issues (for widescreen, not fixed 'til the march release) kept me away from it for a long time. I also would have prefered buying only the first one, # 2 and 3 didn't impress me at all (I saw them in theatres and have avoided them ever since [still haven't watched them on the DVD despite having them].

DAD Boot is also another great flick. I do like having the DVD version, they did a good job on it, and getting rid of the subtitles is great!
And along the same genre, u-571 is pretty good on DVD. It's not as good as Das Boot, but it's a pretty clean transfer with good sound. Just wish they didn't americanize it so much, but that's just a pet peeve about hollywood war movies, and hollywood movies in general.

One movie that isn't Hollywood in it's story is American Beauty, I really liked the additional features of the Awards Edition, (like knowing about the intended court room scenes), very well done, just wish they had found a cuter girl than Suvari!

4 DVDs I had to pull out over the Holidays were; It's a Wonderful Life (my must see X-mas movie + interesting story behind the movie and commentary), Family Man (good story), Holiday Inn (another good story classic), and the Original Grinch with Boris Karloff [nothing aginst Jim's modern version, it's just not the same IMO].

Anywhoo, just thought I'd add those.

Hey Grape, Snow is finally ride able for us. Were going somewhere Sun. for our first real ride of the season. You've been skiing your ass off by now IWI!!! Not sure if we're going lake racing or trail riding yet. Still making plans with the riders.

Dazzle them with Brilliance, or Baffle them with BS!

Reply to RCPilot

Yeah I did some skiing in Ottawa over the Holidays, and hit the mushy trails there too for a few hours of nighttime joy riding. I took out my cousin's friend's new 'modified' Renegade and made mud tracks just to check out his X-mas gift (which he got ~3 weeks before X-mas) Jeez, they're getting ridiculously fast now too. I saw the speedo break 150Km/h (about 90mph) and I wasn't even going 'fast'. I thought I was going to die there over a few bumps  . Those speeds are fine on open lake, but even the straight-aways on the open fields dind't entice me to go all the way full out. Guess I'm getting old.
Got some nice Lobster Claw gloves for skiing while I was out East, and I never realized how handy (no pun intended) they would be for snowmobilin', I would highly recommend them over regular SkiDoo mitts..

The snow is Thick and Freakin' CRISP out here. Great for SkiDoos, but terrible for skiing. A little icey at times, but I can't complain. I'm probably going to head out next week. A SKI/Work friend got married on New Year's so he's out of commision for a while (gotta look at furniture and junk, and his wife has to show him off over the next few weeks).

I'm happy to see you getting some cold weather in your area. Hopefully You'll get some snow with it. Here we had our snow just around New Years, and it's been just cold (-30C) for days. Thankfully I got some new Cut-off Thermals for X-mas. Mmmm Toasty!

I'll put a good word in for you with the snow gods!

EDIT: BTW, sorry I can't help you with your cable problem I work for the Phone company. From what I read I would think it may just be a cable modem issue, but seriously must suck having 2 providers. Persopnally I'd cut my ties with the Cable TV guys, and go Satellite, and then tell the Cable ISP to fix the damn thing Pronto! [but then again I hate Customer Service Rep. Double-Talk!]

What the heck all those movie and nobody has but The Shawshank Redemption yet that is one of my favorite movies of all time. Great acting, music, and directing, don't know about the special features in it but the movie itself is enough to get it. And Jaws is a great movie to add to the collection.
