I won an Intel i7-990x and am looking at the possiblity of upgrading my system vs. selling it.

I currently have an AMD athlon 3500+ with an Asus A8V Deluxe motherboard. As you can tell there isn't much I can salvage since it was built in 2005.

I am not a gamer, and if anything I may do very little video editing if I end up building a new setup. I'm not looking to spend a lot right now. Can any one recommend a build that won't cost me a ton of money?

The big key is the motherboard (X58 chipset based board) and a memory 3 sticks of DDR 3 1066 without overclocking. This Gigabyte GA-X58-USB3 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... looks to be a good board and value. Here is a nice triple channel kit of DDR3 1066 from Crusial http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Are you going to be using anything from your old system?

sell the 990x and with what you get from that build a new system and you might even have a few hundred left over.

Sell it for $400 and get an Ivy Bridge rig.
i5 3570K, Mobo and 8Gb Ram will cost you about $400
You can reuse the case DVD/CD HDD and rest from your current system.

I agree that you should sell it and buy some decent parts for a new build

sell it.!!!!
that CPU can fetch a NICE penny...
enough to fund a complete build...

I'm leaning towards the selling aspect too... though I haven't really had too many serious offers other than low ballers. Anyone have any suggestions on places to sell it other than ebay, which I may end up doing in the end anyway..

My current system also has an antec earthwatts 500w PS, antec lanboy case, and a harddrive and ram and video card that need upgrading :D

can always try craigslist and see what comes.

On ebay you have a much larger market. Shipping this tiny item is easy anywhere in the country.
Do it ASAP while there is still a market for those chips. It is 2 generations behind and will begin to look old soon.

If its till in the box then I would ebay it other wise start with craigslist but use a throwaway cell phone # and be sure to list no trades, no checks, no money orders, and will not ship out of country - otherwise you'll have scammers calling you all day and night..
