Why is 5970 faster than 6970?

Hi guys,

Simple question: I'm shopping for a good card setup to run FSX in a six monitor array and came across this review.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-6990-antilles-crossfire,2878-10.html

Why is the Radeon 5970 outperforming the Radeon 6970 (both 2gb versions in crossfire) in this test? Isn't the 6970 the new model?

Also I haven't found any tests that compare two 6970 2gb in crossfire to two 6950 2gb in crossfire. Can anyone shed some light on this? I'm trying to figure out if I need to spend the extra few hundred for the pair of 6970s.

Because the Radeon HD 5970 is a dual gpu card while the Radeon HD 6970 is a single gpu card. The successor of the HD 5970 is the HD 6990 which is also a dual gpu card.

I would get the HD 6950 as you can upgrade the firmware to make it into a HD 6970.
  2. 5970 is better than the 6970 though. I guess it depends on pricing though. I got my 5970 for 300 dollars.

They do unlock if you have the reference card with the BIOS switch.
