Hi every one. I got a IBM deskstar 75 GXP 46.1 gb hard drive. My BIOS detects it as about 46000 MB, which seems alright. But when I creat partition in windows 2000 setup, windows detects it only 43000 MB. Is this normal or I have to use the softwares on IBM website to fix this? Any response will be greatly appreciated.

Manufactureres advertise drives at 1kilobyte=1000bytes. Actually, it SHOULD be 1kilobyte=1024bytes. Windows will recognize it this way too, so this is normal. The manufacturer uses 1kilobyte=1000bytes to make the drive seem larger.

Thanks for the info.
So far, I am very satified with my new HD, except the little "1000k=1M" trick from IBM.

My 30GB Quantum Fireball AS drive shows at 28.7GB in Windows. But when I received a RMA replacement (old drive was making odd circular saw noises once in a while) the new drive was reported as 27.9GB - nearly 800MB smaller! A call to tech support and they issued yet another RMA to replace the RMA drive. Apparently some drives made in Japan have sizing problems.

Conclusion: call IBM tech support and voice your concerns if you still have any.
