For over a decade, and 6 desktop windows pcs, I have had an irritating problem with my cursor. I will have my hand on my mouse moving the cursor and clicking on the mouse button, when my cursor goes crazy and moves all over the borders of the screen/s. This happens with all op systems from win98 thru xp, and both intel and amd processors. Both ati and nvidia graphics cards. Any ideas as to why? btw, I am left handed, but the mouse buttons are set up for a right handed person.

Wow
tough one

You need to look at what has been the common factor all these years
For example if you have had the same mouse, piece of software, mouse mat etc

I have seen the problem occasionally
recently I had a problem with cursor on Toms but only toms and it went away
also on some laptops I have noticed it
but not as a recurring problem just rarely

I would think that there has to be some common issue
also optical and laser mouses dont always react to surfaces well
for example using a glass top desk or shiny metal desk etc

do you use a flat solid color mouse mat?
has this been with all differnt kinds of mice?
what software has been common to all PCs?

sorry if some of the questions seem simplistic
but basic diagonistic questions need to be asked

Different mice, some usb, some ps2, some with ball, some optical, different pads. Software, can't think on any common app, closest would be the various versions of windows op systems.

Understand the need for more info.

Even though I am left handed I have never changed the mouse buttons, ever, but will try to see if that is the issue. Will report back.

Update, I reversed the buttons on the mouse, and while I had that set up, there wasn't any crazy cursor movement. But that configuration drove me crazy, so I had to change the buttons back to their original functionality :(

I dont understand why reversing the buttons would fix the cursor problem
with the mouse on the left hand or right hand side with normal setup or left handed setup wouldnt affect the cursor hardware wise

I dont mean to be insulting
but could it be human error
that maybe the way you are using the mouse buttons is causing the error?
if hardware and OS have changed over the years
and still have this problem
and reversing the buttons fixed it
it leads me to believe that somehow you are causing the cursor problem
with the way you are using the mouse buttons
why would it be okay by reversing mouse buttons?
that wouldnt affect a hardware problem or software problem
sorry to be insulting
but I think it is human error

I agree, it is crazy, and maybe I am the cause, but the current mitsumi mouse requires a definite amount of pressure to activate either button. So just resting my left index finger should not, but maybe it does bring the electrical contacts for that button into close enough proximity, for current to make a circuit. I will have to see if I can retrain my left hand to a new position where the index finger does not rest on the left mouse button. Thanks for help and suggestions.

I hope I didnt offend
but the technician in me (own a small repair business)
just leads me to think that is what it has to be
with all the hardware changes and OS changes
and then the problem going away with reversing the buttons
it is the only thing that makes sense
