Could a GTX480 1GB work on a pci express 1.0 x16 with good perfomance?

If you mean normal performance as in you wont lose any FPS having the card on a pcie 1.0 mobo. Then no it wont run at 100%. However it won't like half your FPS.

lucky for you not only has this been tested, but its been tested on this website AND with your graphic card.

1.0 x 16 is pretty much the same as a 2.0 x 8. since 2.0 just doubled the data rate. The link provided shows the difference between running a gtx 480 at x16 and x8. According to the tests running at pcie 2.0 x 8 or in your case 1.0 x 16 the card lose roughly 8% of its performance.

Edit : This is assuming nothing is bottle-necking your system. In your case since your cpu is older there will be a bottle-neck so the card wont be running at 100% even if it was in a pcie2.0x16 slot. Once you replace the cpu with a newer one that wont bottle neck your system the loss will be roughly around 8%.

The CPU is a clear issue , but AFAIK the PCIe1.x slot isn't a limiting factor . I've got an overclocked GTX460 in a PCIe 1.x slot and it does fine . I had a similar doubt before buying the 460 and TOMS' members illustrated with examples that the PCIe1.x slot isn't a bottleneck . PCIe 2.0 x 8 = PCIe1.x X16

My Videocard is working without a hitch and the only limiting factor in my rig is the Quad core @ 2.33 gigs.
