Does anyone here use a colorimeter hardware/software combination, such as
the Spyder2PROT Studio by ColorVision
(http://www.colorvision.com/profis/profis_view.jsp?id=34...)
for calibrating your PC monitor? I'll soon be running dual monitors and I'm
thinking about buying one of these devices to help achieve colour accuracy
between the monitors and also for improved colour accuracy in my videos and
digital photos. Before doing so, however, I'd like to hear from someone who
has used these things first-hand . Do they work well? Any 'issues' to be
aware of? TIA

I use the Monaco version of this device. It works quite well (much better
than Adobe Gamma). It works quick. Using it was a great step forward for
me.

You really cannot use color management without a device to calibrate the
monitor.
However you also need a program that uses color management. Even more
difficult than buying stuff, the calibrator and the photo program, you
actually have to take the time to learn and understand how to use the stuff
correctly and how to use color management. This includes the general issues
about color management and the specific issues with regard to your imaging
program and the software drivers of your scanners and printers.
Fortunately it is not that difficult to get the basics.
There are several places on the web with video demonstrations that walk you
through the process in addition to reading about it. If Epson still has
"Print Academy" on their web site it is well worth whatever they charge,
around $30, to download these demos. They are obviously geared toward Epson
printers but really they are more about Photoshop.

Did you use it in a CRT or an LCD?

I have the original CVSpyder and it has been fine. Complain and Color
Vision will send out a new unit, my original was 2 years old stopped
working and they replaced it. I call that good customer service.
I'd agree with Rafe about the Gretag-MacBeth units, they make a better
product but at a much higher price. (As I said before the CV units work
well and have helped me a lot with large format printing).
If I had unlimeted funds the choices would be Gretag-MacBeth, Monaco
then ColorVision (Monaco is only better because I like their profiling
software better). They all will help you get a monitor correct, from
there you can be more confidednt with your images.

I'm using the Eye-1 Monitor (by Gretag MacBeth).
It works fine on either CRT or LCD monitors.

I got burned by some Colorvision stuff years
ago, so I don't deal with them any more.

I had just about decided to buy the Spyder2 Pro Studio but now your
comments, along with Rafe's, have given me pause for thought. I've done a
fair bit of web-based research and I've not seen any other mention of an
inconsistency problem between different Spyder2 units. I realize that the
original Spyder had a poor name (maybe that's Rafe's issue?) but you've
specifically mentioned the Spyder2. Can you offer any more details about
this problem? I plan to use the colorimeter with a dual monitor system (a
new 23" HP L2335 LCD and an older 21" Philips Brilliance 202P4 CRT.) I'm
interested in colour management for video production using Adobe's Premiere
and After Effects and, to a lesser extent, for digital still image
processing using Photoshop CS2.
