I am looking to upgrade my video card. I need a video card that can run things smoothly/maxed at 1920x1080 or the best possible card in the $200 - $300 price range. This is mostly for BF3/Skyrim/GW2 (if it ever comes out), etc. I am currently running a 5770 gpu with:

i7 860 (@ 2.80 GHz)
16 GB RAM (7-7-7-20)
ASUS P7P55D
650 W Corsair PSU

I want something that is powerful but is also backed by reliable/stable drivers... basically from what I've looked at it's either some variant of the Nvidia 560 or ATI 6950, perhaps a low-end Nvidia 570. What's the best for the range/best bang for the buck? And what about the vRAM? 1 gb vs 2 gb?

Thanks!

I am not an expert on this but I will share what I belive to be fact. The ATI 6950 is about the same as the 560 ti's. According to the charts the 6970 is about the same as the 570s. Now if you were to put two of the 560 ti's together it would be better than 580. Now on your Vram some people say the 2 gb is eye candy it just raises the price when it really doesn't do much more. But there is pro's and con's about it. I don't know the cost on the 6970. I like Nivida better than ATI. choises I would make

1st 570
2nd HD 6950
3rd 560 ti
You basically have answered your own question. You are on the right track. Just figure which card you like the most. All three are very good cards. Here is a link to the charts on the cards
