If you are bent on spending cash before trouble shooting with wr2, I'd suggest you pick up the 7970 first and compare the difference of the 550ti. Again, the difference in processors will be about 5-10% as stated earlier.

+1 on your internet connection. Your ping is important, try using speedtest and set it to a local server. Failing that and you've overclocked your CPU I think the graphics may be at fault. The GTX550ti is a 1680x1050 card, and if you're trying to run bf3 at high or something like that at 1080p that'll be the reason why you're getting low fps. Better graphics help performance more than a better cpu

Ding! Ding! Ding!

The fat lady phoned it in . . .

(I'm not calling you a fat lady  )

Fire up that HD7970 with the Propus quad at 3.9GHz (and NB 25000MHz), and let's see what she'll do.

DONG ! DONG ! DONG !

+1^

Your problem is not your 840, its your 550ti, which is a pretty weak GPU.
What i would do is but a GTX670 not the 7970, i think with your 840 clocked @ 3.9ghz you will see a big difference running a GTX670, oh you do have a decent cooler on your CPU right ? Not that its throttling due to heat issues ?

thx guys yeah i am running a 24 inch monitor at 1080p good thing i didnt hook up my 32inch or i may have broke down crying lol now i am looking at the GTX 680 FTW+ 4GB
and i have a Corsair h60 as my cpu cooler

If they're both 1920x1080 pixels performance would be the same. It's not size- it's pixels.

If your 32" in 720p - performance would be quite a bit better driving 1366x768 pixels.

Look at one of those new GTX 670s.

You haven't ruled out a network problem yet.
Your connection is OK, but get a couple dozen players on a busy server with marginal connections - that's going to impact the server and your network performance.
