Phantom of the Opera: Where's the plot?

I went to see this show just the other night, and I really must say that
I'm not at all impressed. I didn't have the patience to listen to the
words in the endless barrage of songs, so I just listened to the
dialogue. It seemed to me that there was basically no explanation of the
characters' motivations, and the story seemed pretty skimpy. What gives?
