Would you choose a new monitor over GPU?

evening, just interested in what you guys would choose between either a full hd monitor ( upgrade from a 6 year old 16ms monitor  ) and another cheap 4870 512mb

or, as my previous trusty 4870 just burnt out on me, a new gtx 550 to go with my new 2500k build, but im a headless chicken when it comes down to graphics card so, with my situation which you would buy before the other.

bear in mind, this is just for gaming ( nothing heavy ) and to do my programming work on.

Unless there's a reason you need the 2500K (the programming? Elaborate.) you'd do well to go 955 and have a little extra money for the other parts. What's the resolution on the old monitor?
What's "nothing heavy"? MW3? WOW? Skyrim? Crysis 2? lol

GPU definitely.
you can replace your monitors all you want but you will never get the display settings you want without more current graphics card.

you can think of buying a monitor later, get your internal parts first.

If you step up in GPU don't buy the GTX 550. It is to high in price and It will not preform. I know this because I am a proud owner of Two of them, NOT!!! They get more money and you get less bang. I love Nvidia cards but a AMD/ATI 6770 or a 6790 would be better than that card. Its to bad you can't get both for your up grades. Good luck.

You can tri sli with 580's if he wants but you'll never get a decent display until you upgrade to a new monitor. I see peeps on here all the time buying 500 dollar vid cards to go with a 200 dollar monitor! :pt1cable:

I'm perfectly happy with my Asus VH236H monitor for $160. 1920X1080 res. There are bigger, badder monitors out there but at least you get some nice screen real estate to view at high def.

I would go with a new LED back lit widescreen 18-20inch, bigger if you want to move to 1080... I would hold tight with the 4870 until GPU prices drop with the next series to come out, then upgrade.

For my recent upgrade, I went for SLi rather than a new monitor that could utilise it. Because the GTX 580 I need to pair with mine will be hard to find soon, and I can always use a monitor down the line later =D

Once you go to a 27" or bigger you'll wonder how you got along with anything smaller. I only paid 250 for my Samsung. I game on a 32" Vizio.
