Hello,
I have a router and a wifi laptop; I want to connect with JUST the hard wire CAT 5; but the laptop defaults to wireless unless I turn off my WIFI; which I use for wireless display on a tv. How do I get the laptop to recognize ONLY the CAT 5 when it is plugged in?

Maybe this will work for you (steps work for XP and Vista only)

How to change the binding order of network adapters:

Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl , and then click OK.

You can see the available connections in the LAN and High-Speed Internet section of the Network Connections window.

On the Advanced menu, click Advanced Settings, and then click the Adapters and Bindings tab.

In the Connections area, select the connection that you want to move higher in the list. Use the arrow buttons to move the connection.

On my win7 laptop (wired and wireless interface) I can follow your steps - I didn't change anything as I rarely use a wired connection, even when home, but I can get the advanced menu following your steps. Win 7 ultimate x64

Just curious and now you know as well.

KNOWLEDGE!!! ;)
