I5 2500k vs AMD 960t

I have been debating builds for a while, and have settled on everything except the MOBO and APU:

Build so far:

Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233&Tpk=cooler%20master%20912
PSU: Cooler Master 450W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171060
Mem: Gskill ripjaw 2x4 DDR3 1600 (12800) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231428
HD: Hitachi 500gb 7200
DVD: Asus DVDrw 24

I am still in search of a MOBO and APU

Current Planned Primary use: (Multitasking in basic applications, Surfing internet; Excel; Light Gaming (Old school stuff, Ultima Online, 6 year old RPGs, I understand that if I want to play any game from the last few years I will need a massive overhaul), streaming Netflix)

Potential Future Primary use: Everything above plus Skyrim, WOW, Diablo 3, other RPGs at med-high settings

I am starting to think that gaming is going to become a more important feature on this computer in the next 6 months, but may not,

All that being said, and knowing I have access to a Microcenter to get a $180 i5-2500k and discount on MOBO, I intend to put an i5 -2500k and z68 MOBO in the machine to complete it. If I decide to make this a gaming PC, I will add either a 6850 with a new PS, or try and add a 5670 or 6670 with my current PSU if it will support it.

1. My primary question, is if based on the above info and me being indifferent to the additional $50-$80 cost that is associated with a i5 w/ z68 over a 960t w/ AM3+, is there any reason to not go the Intel i5-2500k path?

2. I realize that if I add a 6850 I will need a better PSU, but will the other cards need more than 450W?

I am just trying to make sure the i5-2500k will beat the 960t even in the case I decide to use this for a basic use multitasking machine (Excel, surfing, streaming vids) as opposed to a gaming machine as I hear the i5 beats the 960t if cost is not an issue.

Any input or suggestions are appreciated.

  1. No contest. Core i5-2500k and ASUS or Gigabyte z68 mother board. AMD has nothing on the market at the same level.

I don't think there's any difference in the tasks you mention. Any modern CPU is going to run Excel and Chrome no problem.
  3. No Brainer!!! 2500K FTW
