I have a Klipsch ProMedia 4.1 speaker system that I'm very happy with, but I want to know if I can easily upgrade it to 5.1. According to Klipsch this is ABSOLUTLELY NOT POSSIBLE, but I don't see why I couldn't just set Windows and my soundcard (Audigy 2) to 5.1 and plug a speaker into the center output from my soundcard. Is there something I'm missing here? Is it not this simple?

b. That speaker would have to have the volume matched perfectly to the surround speakers. Every time you increased the volume on the surrounds, you would have to increase the volume on the center.
c. That speaker would have to be accoustically matched, as it may have a different acoustic structure than your Klipsh speakers, and at different frequencies the center speaker would sound overpowering, or dead.
It's not that easy unless you know what you're doing.
