First build need help

Motherboard: gigabyte Ga-Z68ap-dr3
Videocard: H.I.S radeon 6850

This is my first build and i've hit my first problem. After getting everything assembled i powered up to install all the software but no display. everything thing else is working fine, lights, fans, cd/dvd drives but no picture. any help is greatly appreciated.

Good link.. number 2 got me on my first try. It is definitely a common mistake.

What's with the thing on the right in that picture..

Its generally best to install everything first and after installing the os then add a video card. (thats how i do it as its easier to not have to try to install it all at once lol)
