It takes some time for me to discover new features of a camera...
My problem is the "quick white reference white balance button". If I
use it, then the monitor is turned on and displays - hopefully - "good"
and the display says "WB".
But whatever button I press: OK/Monitor/Shutter, the "WB" disappears.
Does this mean it didn't register the white balance, that there is no
clue at all that WB is set using the quick reference button or that I
am too dumb to understand the manual?
Any hint would be gratefully appreciated.

It is a little tricky.
You press the WB button on the front of the camera while pointing at a
white object. You look at the LCD screen, and if it asks if it is OK,
you press the OK button to accept it. THEN, you must press the little WB
button on top of the camera and rotate the main dial so the white
balance setting goes from A to 0 (zero). When in the zero setting of the
white balance dial, you are using the WB that was set by the procedure.
It is not enough to just press the WB button on front. Three step process.
