How do I activate "compress old files" in "disk cleanup."

My laptop does this but my desktop does not.

Thanks,
Karl

I wish it did help, but on my desktop when I do a "Disk Cleanup" the option
to compress old files is not present.

Thanks anyway,
Karl

Karl,

I'm guessing that your hard drive is formatted FAT32 and not NTFS. Did you
do an upgrade to XP? Compressing is not an option with FAT32.

To find out...
Open My Computer | Right click your hard drive icon | Properties |
On the General tab it will say...
Type:
and
File system:
What's it say next to File system:????
FAT32 or NTFS??

If FAT32, you're SOL. If NTFS there may be another problem.

OK, Wes.

Thanks. That is it. My Sony desktop came with XP-home, but the "C" drive is
FAT32, the "D" drive is formatted NTFS. Mystery solved. Thanks,
Karl
