Hello, my wife was plugging usb in to print and screen went blank. It appears the plastic post in the center of the usb is gone and there are just the pins left. If she shorted these while plugging printer in could this have caused shut down, no power up/post. Power light comes on, cd spins up then light shuts off.

Could replacing usb/io board fix?

Welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums!

Inserting the USB flash drive backwards can damage the plastic part that you are referring to. Like you suggest, replacing the USB I/O board might help. The damage may be local to that.

During the POST sequence it is seeing that the USB is damaged and shutting down. POST beeps will verify this.
